Cardiology Services for Pets
At The Animal Doctors of Orange County, we understand how important your pet’s heart health is to their overall well-being. That’s why we’re proud to offer specialized veterinary cardiology services right here in our hospital—so your pet can receive advanced care in a familiar, stress-free environment.
Partnering with a Board-Certified Cardiologist
We are pleased to work closely with a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. They would visit our facilities to perform in-hospital cardiology consultations and diagnostic testing for our patients. This partnership ensures your pet receives expert cardiac care without the need to travel to a specialty center.
Echocardiograms for Pets
One of the most valuable diagnostic tools in veterinary cardiology is the echocardiogram (also called an “echo”).
An echocardiogram is a non-invasive, ultrasound-based test that allows us to visualize your pet’s heart in real time. This test provides detailed information about:
- Heart size and shape
- Heart chamber function
- Valve structure and performance
- Blood flow patterns within the heart
Echocardiograms are completely painless and generally do not require anesthesia. Most pets remain calm and comfortable during the procedure.
- Shaved Area – A small patch of fur may be shaved on your pet’s chest to allow the ultrasound probe to make the best contact and capture the clearest images.
- Light Sedation – In some cases, very light sedation may be given to help keep pets relaxed and still, ensuring we obtain the most accurate results.
Why Your Pet May Need an Echocardiogram
Your veterinarian may recommend an echocardiogram if your pet:
- Has a heart murmur detected during an exam
- Is showing signs of coughing, lethargy, or difficulty breathing
- Has fainting or collapsing episodes
- Is part of a breed prone to heart disease
- Needs pre-anesthetic screening for high-risk surgery
How It Works at Our Hospital
- Referral & Scheduling – Your primary veterinarian will refer your pet for an echocardiogram or cardiac consult with the cardiologist
- Day of Appointment – You and your pet will check in at our hospital as usual.
- Consultation & Testing – The Cardiologist will review your pet’s medical history, perform a physical exam, and conduct the echocardiogram.
- Results & Plan – Results are reviewed with you, and a personalized treatment plan is discussed before you go home.
Continuity of Care
Because The cardiologist performs these procedures right in our facility, we can seamlessly coordinate follow-up care with your pet’s regular veterinarian—keeping everything in one medical record for accuracy and efficiency.
