Safer Anesthesia Starts Before the Procedure

Pre Anesthetic

At The Animal Doctors of Orange County, we believe anesthesia should never be treated as a single-day event. The safest anesthetic experience begins well before your pet's procedure. Our Pre-Anesthetic Plan (PPP) is designed to prepare your pet both medically and emotionally for anesthesia, while also giving you clarity and confidence every step of the way.

Because they deserve it all.

What Is a Pre-Anesthetic Plan (PPP)?

The Pre-Anesthetic Plan is a proactive approach to anesthesia that allows us to evaluate your pet's health in advance, rather than making decisions the morning of the procedure. This visit can be completed during a wellness exam or scheduled as a technician appointment, depending on your pet's needs and your schedule. During this visit, we perform pre-anesthetic lab work and prepare medications that help support a smoother, safer experience from start to finish.

Why Pre-Anesthetic Planning Matters

Anesthesia is incredibly safe when approached thoughtfully, but every pet is an individual. Age, breed, underlying conditions, and even subtle changes in organ function can influence how a pet responds.

By evaluating your pet ahead of time, we are able to:

  • Identify any underlying concerns before anesthesia
  • Adjust protocols based on your pet's specific needs
  • Reduce day-of stress for both you and your pet
  • Create a more controlled, predictable experience

Instead of making rapid decisions on the day of the procedure, we are able to move forward with a clear, informed plan.

What Is Included in the PPP Visit

Blood Sampling

During your pet's Pre-Anesthetic Plan visit, we focus on both medical readiness and comfort.

Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork

A blood sample is collected and sent to the lab to evaluate organ function, including the liver and kidneys, as well as red and white blood cell counts. These values help us determine how your pet will process anesthesia and recover afterward.

Take-Home Medications

We send home medications designed to support your pet before, during, and sometimes after their procedure:

  • Anti-nausea medication to be given the morning of the procedure
  • Anti-anxiety medication to be given the night before and the morning of the procedure
    • In some cases, additional doses may be recommended for post-operative comfort

This combination helps reduce stress, prevent nausea, and create a smoother anesthetic experience overall.

A More Comfortable Experience for Your Pet

Free visit

For many pets, the most stressful part of a procedure is not the procedure itself, but the anticipation, the car ride, and being in an unfamiliar environment.

By starting anti-anxiety support the night before, we are able to reduce that stress response before it even begins. This leads to:

  • Easier drop-offs
  • Smoother anesthetic induction
  • Lower overall stress levels
  • A more positive experience for your pet

It is a small step that makes a meaningful difference.

Thoughtful Care That Also Supports You

The PPP model is not only safer and more thorough, it is also more practical.

By completing lab work ahead of time, we avoid delays and unexpected add-ons the morning of the procedure. This allows for:

  • Clear expectations before the procedure day
  • More efficient scheduling
  • Better financial planning without time pressure

You receive the same level of gold-standard care, just delivered in a way that is more organized, transparent, and manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all pets need pre-anesthetic lab work?

In most cases, yes. Lab work provides valuable insight into your pet's internal health that cannot be assessed through a physical exam alone. Some doctors may recommend more comprehensive lab panels depending on your pet's age, medical history, or specific concerns. In certain cases, recent diagnostic testing may be used in place of standard pre-anesthetic labs, but this is determined on an individual basis.

Does my dog or cat really need anti-anxiety medication?

You know your pet best. Some pets handle new environments well, while others experience significant stress when separated from their owner.

That said, many pets benefit from additional support. Even mild anxiety can elevate stress hormones, which can impact how a pet responds to anesthesia. Providing anti-anxiety medication helps create a calmer, more controlled experience.

If your pet tends to be nervous, reactive, or particularly attached to you, this step can make a noticeable difference in their comfort.

Is this required for every procedure?

While not always required, we strongly recommend the Pre-Anesthetic Plan for most anesthetic procedures. It allows us to practice medicine proactively rather than reactively, which is always in your pet's best interest.
