Some dogs walk into the clinic wagging their whole body. Others need a little more help getting there, and that's more common than you'd think. At our location, working with nervous and anxious dogs is something our team has a real talent and passion for. We use Fear Free-informed techniques as our guideline, and our goal is simple: we want your dog to actually like us, or at the very least, not dread coming to see us.

Treating the whole dog means treating their comfort, too.

Every nervous or anxious dog gets a plan built around them, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Our Fear-Free-Informed Approach

  • •Reading your dog's body language — our team is trained to notice early signs of stress, so we can slow down or change our approach before your dog feels overwhelmed.
  • •Low-stress handling — we replace forceful restraint with gentler, more patient techniques whenever possible, positioning your dog for comfort rather than convenience.
  • •Going at your dog's pace — a slow, gradual approach, rather than rushing straight into a procedure, gives anxious dogs a chance to settle in and feel less cornered.
  • •Building positive association over time — the goal isn't just getting through one visit, it's making each visit a little easier than the last.

How Our Team Builds Trust With Your Dog

Trust-building is something our nurses and team put real thought into, and a lot of it comes down to small, personal touches:

  • •Getting down on the floor — our team will often sit or kneel with your dog rather than tower over them, so they feel less overwhelmed from the start.
  • •Being visibly friendly with you first — we'll chat with you, laugh, and connect, so your dog sees that you trust us, and picks up on that same trust.
  • •Matching how you talk to your dog — if you baby talk your pup at home, we're more than happy to baby talk them too. Let us know, and we'll follow your lead.
  • •Using their nicknames — if your dog has a special nickname, tell us. We love using the names your dog already knows and trusts.
  • •Singing to nervous dogs — sometimes a silly little song, occasionally inspired by their own name, is exactly what helps a nervous dog relax.

At the end of the day, our whole team genuinely wants your dog to feel comfortable with us, and that shows in the little things just as much as the big ones.

Emotional Support Stuffies

Sometimes a dog just needs a distraction, and that's where our emotional support "stuffies" come in. A familiar, comforting plush toy to hold, sniff, or snuggle can take a dog's focus off what's happening and give them something soft and reassuring to anchor to during the visit.

In Front of You, or Away, Whatever Works Best

We're very comfortable performing most of our exams and procedures right in front of you, and that's our default. But for some dogs, especially ones who are protective of their owner, being examined away from you for a few minutes actually helps them relax, and it keeps our staff safe while we work. If we think a brief separation would help your dog, we'll always talk it through with you first, and it's available upon request if you feel it would help.

Happy Visits

One of the best things you can do for a nervous or anxious dog is show them the vet isn't only about needles and thermometers, and that's exactly what a Happy Visit is for. These are low-key, no-appointment-necessary visits where your dog gets to come in, hop on the scale, and soak up love, kisses, and attention from our team, plus treats, as long as that fits within your dog's diet. No exam, no blood draw, nothing uncomfortable. Just a friendly "hey, how are you," a chance to get to know us, and a chance for us to get to know your dog.

We highly encourage Happy Visits, especially for dogs who struggle with vet visits. If you'd like the whole team involved or want to plan around a specific time, just give us a call ahead of time. Otherwise, feel free to swing by whenever works for you, no appointment needed.

Medication to Take the Edge Off

For some dogs, a bit of extra support alongside our handling techniques makes a real difference. We can use medication in conjunction with a regular visit to help take the edge off, especially for dogs who get worked up before we've even done anything. Paired with our slow, patient approach, this helps a dog have a calmer experience today, which makes tomorrow's visit that much easier too.

A note on medication: this isn't about sedating every anxious dog. It's one more tool we can use, tailored to your dog, to make a hard day a little easier.

Positive Association & Bribery

We're huge fans of bribing your dog, especially on the way out. Think of it like a trip to the dentist: nobody loves the appointment itself, but everybody remembers the prize at the end. That same idea works for dogs. A treat, praise, and an enthusiastic goodbye on the way out helps build a positive memory of their visit, so the next trip starts off a little less scary than the last.

Every Plan Is Tailored to Your Dog

There's no single formula for an anxious dog. What helps one dog relax might not work for another, so we build a plan around your dog specifically, their triggers, their comfort level, and what's worked (or hasn't) in the past. Whether that means a stuffed animal, a slower pace, a quiet moment away from the room, or medication, we adjust based on what your dog actually needs.

Don't Just Take Our Word For It

We know it can be hard to believe a nervous or reactive dog could ever actually enjoy coming to the vet, so instead of just telling you, we'd rather show you. Here's a five-star review from a client whose dog isn't exactly a people-person, but genuinely loves coming to see us.
